PROJECT SYNOPSIS ▾
THE PROJECT IS LOCATED IN YOUYI BAY ON THE NORTH SHORE OF ANAYA IN BEIDAIHE. THE DESIGN HAS TO DEAL WITH THE
EXISTING BENT BLACK STEEL FRAME, THE VOLUMES OF THE SQUARE’S MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL ROOM AND THE BASEMENT EXIT.
THE LANDSCAPE DETERMINES THE PROJECT. THE SQUARE IS SURROUNDED BY TALL LANDMARKS ON THREE OTHER SIDES, AND THE SITE
IS THE ONLY VIEW CORRIDOR TO THE SEA. WHAT SHOULD EXIST HERE IS NOT A BUILDING, BUT A LIGHT LANDSCAPE THAT CONNECTS
THE DISTANT SEASIDE SCENERY WITH THE ARTIFICIAL TIDES IN THE SQUARE, BRINGING GENTLE SEA BREEZES TO THE SQUARE....
LIKE TWO SMALL STONES GENTLY LEANING AGAINST EACH OTHER ON THE BEACH, TWO SLENDER WHITE VOLUMES SHAPE THE IMAGE OF
THE PROJECT, WITH THEIR BENT FORM RESPONDING TO THE STEEL FRAME. THE LARGE GLASS CURTAIN WALL ALLOWS FOR THE PASSAGE
OF SIGHT AND LIGHT, MAKING THE BUILDING COMPLETELY OPEN TO THE SQUARE. THE INTERIOR SPACE IS JUST A PART OF THE
WHOLE SQUARE SHADED BY TWO STONES, AND THE GLASS CURTAIN WALL DOES NOT SEEM TO EXIST. THE MAIN ENTRANCE IS SET AT
THE HIGHEST POINT WHERE THE TWO VOLUMES MEET, AND THE CHANGE OF SCALE NATURALLY LEADS PEOPLE IN AND OUT. THE VOLUMES
HAVE BEEN MODERATELY CUT SO THAT ENTERING THE BUILDING IS LIKE WALKING INSIDE A STONE. DAYLIGHT POURS DOWN FROM THE
SKYLIGHT OPENING: TRANSPARENT AND BRIGHT.
WHEN THE LIGHTS COME ON, THE WARMTH OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHT CHANGES THE INTERIOR ATMOSPHERE. THE LIGHTS ARE ARRANGED IN
RINGS OF DIFFERENT SIZES, INTIMATELY INVITING PEOPLE TO GATHER, DECORATING SPLENDID BANQUETS. WHEN WE COME OUTSIDE
TO GET SOME AIR, WE SEE THE WATER SURFACE OF THE SQUARE REFLECTS THE INNER LIGHT, AND THE SHIMMERING WAVES REMIND US
THAT IT WAS IN THE SAME SQUARE THAT WE MET UNDER THE SUN, AND PARTIED AT NIGHT.
